ABSTRACT: „THE ROLE OF BEAUTY IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE”

Author: Dr. Wolfgang Metka
Dr. Metka is a specialist in Plastic Surgery mainly engaged in Esthetic Surgery; in Private Practice for 25 years, former Head of Department (Primarius) of an Esthetic surgical unit.

„There is nothing more practical than a good theory”. Part of beauty is relative („lies in the eye of the beholder”), but part of it bases on biological constants. Being aware of these facts helps the esthetically engaged physician as a guide to decisions.

A: for the surgically active physician neoclassical statues (by Canova and Thorwaldsen - the High Priests of Beauty) are the best guides, as this was the last period in Western art when beauty was sought. They sculpted their works after drawing and studying hundreds of models - and hit the nerve of beauty even of modern man. They are better guides than modern beauty contests or literature.

B: biological constants
- a well balanced endocrinium, mainly concerning sexual hormone levels, determines the looks of skin, brilliant eyes and psychic well being - commonly accepted as esthetic.
- anatomical constants are the coniugata vera etc. of the pelvis, associated with it the midriff (waist). A ratio of 70:100 (waist:hip size) are considered beautiful and attractive throughout all cultures and even correlate with a healthy BMI.
